Travel the World Through Your Taste Buds: Hasta Luego Espana

Travel the World Through Your Taste Buds: Hasta Luego España!

Welcome back to our week in beautiful Spain! This week we ran into some troubles with our desserts, much like many people can run into trouble while traveling. I originally wanted to make flan for everyone but I will explain what happened in the great flan disaster of 2017.

Where are we going?

First we will head back to my host family’s house in Seville, Spain. Like I said in my last post my host mother did all of the baking and cooking of desserts. I actually got to make flan with my host mother while in Spain. She had this special tin that she used to make flan, and trust me when I say I wish I had this tin a few days ago. The great flan disaster of 2017, here it goes, I am sugar free (or trying to be) and the first hurdle was the fact that fake sugar does not melt, it just burns and releases an acrid smoke that stings your eyes horribly. I then had to make the base caramel with actual sugar and I decided to add in a bit of sweetened condensed milk (when cooked this becomes Dulce de Leche) in Spain they use sweetened condensed milk in tons of desserts and even eat it straight with fruit. The caramel base became too hard too quickly and wasn’t a liquid base. The flan  itself was very liquid and actually spilled everywhere when I tried to put it into the oven. This is not what happened when I made flan with my host mom in Spain but things happen, so I changed what I was making.

What are we making?

In Spain Churros are very popular so I chose to make churros instead of the messy flan. The recipe I used was not my host mother’s recipe because I couldn’t quite remember what it was so I googled a quick churro recipe. Turns out it was the same one my mom used when my brother had to make churros for his spanish class, and she ran into the same issue I did, the churro batter was very loose and runny so it would not hold the shape of a traditional churro (which is actually a giant spiral, not a tube). I also made them sugar free which took away some binding but they were still delicious!

Join me next week as we jet off to France!
